Night shift premiums in Ontario typically range from $1 to $3 per hour above the base rate. On a $20/hr role, that's $40–$120 extra per week — meaningful money over a year.
But it's not just about the premium. Night shifts often mean quieter facilities, less supervisor pressure, and sometimes more overtime availability. Many workers find they're more productive when management isn't around.
The real cost is lifestyle. Night work disrupts sleep, social life and family routines. Research shows it takes the body 6–12 months to fully adapt to a permanent night schedule — and some people never fully adapt.
Our recommendation: if you're young, single and focused on stacking money fast, night shift can be a powerful accelerator. If you have family commitments or health concerns, the premium may not offset the cost.
